Problem Simulating Noise Figure of Gm Cell (single Ended)

Hi,

I was trying to simulate the NF of simple Inverter (Which I will use as a gm-cell at the output of my switch-cap passive mixer). Unfortunately I am getting NF=46.48 dB for my circuit.

I have attached the necessary Photos of my circuit.  

Could anyone help me out regarding this?

Problem of Nport PSS shooting simulation

Hello,

I have some problem when doing the PSS/PAC/PSP simulation with Nport from the analoglib.

I'm using Spectre Version 19.1.0.373.isr7 64bit and Virtuoso IC6.1.8-64b.

I wrote a S4P touchstone file to model an ideal IQ coupler and simulated it with Nport component from analoglib.

I tried PSS/PSP/PAC simulations with both shooting and HB engine.

The result of HB engine is correct, funtioning exactly as an ideal IQ coupler. While the result of shooting engine is completely wrong.

I used the PSS shooting engine for NPORT simulation with Spectre 14 and Virtuoso IC6.1.6 before. It works very well.

I wonder whether there is a way to get NPORT works with PSS shooting engine in the new Spectre/Virtuoso version.

For the Nport setup, I  tried nearly all the options for passivity, causilty, interpolation methods.

One weird thing is that no matter which interpolation methods I chose (linear, rational), the final fitting is always based on BBspice.

Any comment is appreciated. Thank you.

ISF Function from PPV & plotting various PPVs

Hi 

I am new to Cadence environment. And trying to plot ISF in Cadence. 

Firstly, is there any paper that describes the relationship between them? Because the ones I found are mathematically rigorous and not very practical/hands on? 

Second, when Cadence does save ppv plots in a binary file (after the save ppv option is enabled in pnoise), are the ppv plots saved for "each node" of circuit? Maybe for passives as well?

Is it possible to generate a pulse signal with a specific duty cycle and  with fixing th number of the pulses using AWR Cadence ? I searched in the previous questins in the Forum and there were answers for this question concerning Cadence virtuoso , not AWR cadence.

Question about DC convergence error in sweep simulation.

Hello, thank you in advance for your assistance.

I was making simple op-amp, but I used verilog-a based mosfet model (MIT-VS model).

To see DC operating point, I did DC simulation, and it seemed like the values settled on wrong point. (Results were not reasonable.)

However, when I did sweep simulation (sweep variable was temperature, which should be almost non-relative to the results), I found DC convergence result goes to correctly as simulations goes on. - This is also weird and I couldn't understand.

However, as dcOp still gives not reasonable values, so I cannot do other simulations like measuring AC gain.

I've already used nodeset, but it didn't worked.

Could anyone give me the solution how to apply dcOp to points that were gathered through sweep simulation, or to get appropriate DC results from the beginning?

bbspice process failed

I searched this and the RF forum, but couldn't find a discussion on this issue before. I am simulating a VCO test-bench with inductors extracted using EMX. I have the s-parameter file path entered as a variable for the n-port. When I start the simulation I get this error at the start almost immediately:

Error found by spectre during initial setup.

      ERROR (NPORT-1022): Generate lock-file for bbspice process failed.

Interestingly, when I simulate just the inductor n-port by itself with the same s-parameter file as above to get the Q and L, the simulation runs smoothly and I get the expected result. Another thing is that there are some older s-parameter files from last year that run perfectly fine with the above VCO test-bench. I'm not really sure what the problem is so would greatly appreciate some help. Thank you.

PSS & PNOISE simulation for VCO and PLL

Hi,

I am designing an injection-locked VCO, which requires a PLL to work properly. so I want to put my VCO in an Ideal PLL. I use PLLMMlib and PLL macro model wizard available in virtuoso, according to "VCO spectreRF workshop". at very first step, I chose VCO bench in PLL macro model wizard to run pss & pnoise to create a noise model of my VCO to replace it in the Ideal PLL. According to the existence of  periodic source in VCO, I must not to check the oscillator box in PSS analysis.  

However, when I do the simulation, the PSS is ok but for PNOISE, there is an error: "error (sfe-51): name conflict: value `vco_vout' of type `scalar string' encountered. expected value is of type `scalar instance'."

According to the "VCO spectreRF workshop", there are two Idc components at output nodes with the dc value of 0 and instance name "vco_vout" and "vco_vout1", "vco_vout" is chosen as the output probe in PNOISE analysis.

First, I am not sure if that is the correct way to analysis my VCO's phase noise response.

Next, I dont know if the error is because of the injected vco and the pss setups and how to fix the error.

sampled pnoise on multi-phase switched cap circuit

Hi,
I have one question about the sampled pnoise simulation:
If I have a switched capacitor sample and hold circuit to sample the noise of resistor R, and now I add another switch sampler just paralleled with the first switch, with same sampling freq (fs) but nonoverlapping. so, the pss fund. freq = fs, but essentially the switch freq is 2fs.

how can  I simulate the circuit to get the right noise density (4kTR*pi/2*f3db/fs), instead of 4kTR*pi/2*f3db*2/fs? is pnoise option "sampleratio" is right way to do here.

[EMX] Parametric sweep pcell

Hey,

Is there a way in EMX to do a parametric sweep of a pcell. Let's say I have an inductor, and I want to sweep the diameter. This diameter I'll give the name 'D' in the layout pcell parameter. In the EMX setup, is there a way to sweep this parameter and perform an EM-Simulation for each point and save the results? Thus potentially using these simulations in the symbol of the inductor in a schematic view with the same parameter 'D', thus when running a schematic simulation, all you would have to do is change the parameter 'D' in the schematic, and the corresponding s-parameter file would be used in the schematic simulations.

SP simulation phase wrap

Hi,

I'm tring to do a SP analysis based on my measured touchstone file to see the phase difference between S31 and S21, which is supposed to be around 180 degree.

However, the result is like -179 degree at 50GHz while 179 degree at 51GHz. The phase is plotted between (-180,180].

I tried the unwrapp function but it doesn't help.

I wonder whether there is a function like phasewrap so that it can be transformed in to (0, 360].

I'm using virtuoso 6.1.8 and Spectre 19.1.0.373.isr7.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Waveform calculator - Integration operation wrt to an independent variable

Hello,

I have a question about the use of calculator functions. I believe his is a rather tricky one.

I run a power sweep in a single tone HB simulation for an amplifier, say with a input power sweep range from -30dBm to 10dBm.

Then I calculate the AMAM (single tone amplitude distortion) by plotting (PowerGain_vs_InputPower)-(PowerGain@-30dBm). Let's call this function AMAM(Pin).

I want to integrate the following from 0.1 to 10, for each swept value of Pin (x being an independent variable):

x * { AMAM(x * Pin_W) - AMAM(Pin_W) } * dx

Due to the AMAM(x * Pin_W) term, the calculation can of course be done only for a Pin range of -20dBm to 0dBm in this case (otherwise AMAM(Pin) function is invalid given the integration range is from 0.1 to 10).

Is there a way to do this using cadence calculator?

My cadence version is ICADVM20.1-64b.500.20

Doing a swept simulation and for each simulated point save the snp

Hello everybody,

in a "sp" simulation there is the possibility to save the corresponding s2p in a file. If one enters a VAR (variable), he can also parametrize the corresponding file name.

On my testbench I create  several corners where each has a different content for the variable "output_file". Let's say

  • in "corner_v1" --> output_file="mysnp_v1.s2p"
  • in "corner_v2" --> output_file="mysnp_v2.s2p"
  • and so on...

when I run a sp simulation among 3 corners I get 3 snp files stored on the local folder. Each file correspond to a given corner.

To simplify the workload on my side, instead of creating corners, Is it possible to perform a variable sweep let's say from 0:1:10 and create 11 s2p files where each file is named with the corresponding index ? (e.g. "mysnp_0.s2p", "mysnp_1.s2p", "mysnp_2.s2p", ...,  "mysnp_10.s2p")

Spectre/RF Matlab Toolbox

Is a working version of spectre required to use the spectre matlab toolbox?

Currently I'm running in fedora 35 and need to parse spectre output with matlab. I do have spectre installed but it doesn't work on fedora 35. When I run cds_srr it crashes with the same error as this post.

Can you simulate an EM layout extraction with lumped elements in the middle of the layout with Microwave Office?

Hello,

We have a layout with layout cells for inductors and capacitors to impedance match a Qorvo LNA (they provde an S2P).

Each capacitor/inductor S2P file from muRata straddles each layout cell so we can see how EM coupling affects the match.

We would like to get the combined behavior of EM+S2P. The extraction shows ports at each component location where the iNets connect.

When we used AXIEM to simulate the EM, it seems to only simulate the metal, but ignores the S2P components that are connected to on the circuit schematic. 

Is there a way to get AXIEM (or another EM simulator) to use the S2P components at the same time that EM simulation takes place so we can see how layout coupling affects the impedance match?

Uh, oh.  It is bigger than 1MB.  Here are some pictures, maybe you can help!

  • The schematic "LNA test" is where the extraction takes takes place, and the graphs and measurements reference this schematic as well.
  • The schematic "LNA 144MHz Component" schematic has the LNA layout.  (Note that subcircuits like "S2P_CAP_0402" combine the footprint with S2P connectivity so we can switch between EM and not-EM by toggling the EXTRACT block.  The layout cell footprints (like 0402) are applied to dummy components inside the S2P_CAP_0402 subcircuit to help with that.)
  • The extraction "EM_Extract_Doc" shows the extraction and ports at every component pad.
  • The graph "LNA" shows S11 and S21:
    • With the EXTRACT block in the "LNA test" schematic disabled, the graph shows a good S11/21. 
    • With the EXTRACT block enabled, S11/21 are horrible, presumably because AXIEM is not considering the S2P components and only simulates metal.  See the "Show Currents" output, all current is on the Port 1 MLIN, nothing gets past, everything reflects.
      • (press F8, EM takes ~1 minute to simulate)
